Puta Mexicana refers to a Brazilian dance trend that started on TikTok in December 2022, based on the song of the same name. In it, the dancer has to do a classic funk movement following the song’s rhythm. The trend became popularized in January 2023, with over 157,000 videos uploaded on TikTok and more than 212,000 posts on Instagram Reels featuring the dance in two months.

Origin

“Puta Mexicana” can be translated as "Mexican Bitch" in English and is a song collaboration by the Brazilian artists DJ Jeeh FDC, MC Menor MT, Yuri Redicopa and Mc Pelé. A music video was uploaded on YouTube[1] on December 7th, 2022 by the Funk 24por48 YouTube Channel, where it reached over 16 million views in three months (seen below).

Spread

The spread of the song increased when Brazilian funk dancers started to upload videos with the song on TikTok[2] around the end of December 2023, when a video of DJ Arana doing the dance trend gained virality on the platform. Posted by the TikTok[3] account @funk24por48oficial on December 26th, 2022, the video received 29.6 million plays and 3.3 million likes in three months (seen below)

The dance moves performed by the DJ inspired 25,500[4] other videos on TikTok[5] replicating the dance moves, like the Brazilian surfer Gabriel Medina's post (below, left) on January 24th, 2023, which garnered 1 million plays and 106,000 likes in two weeks. TikTok[6] user @apisto_vl shared a collection (below, right) of people trying to replicate DJ Arana's dance moves on January 31st, 2023, receiving 1.8 million plays and 77,100 likes in one week.
