Purse Challenge, also known as Bag Challenge, refers to a series of TikTok videos in which one person in the driver's seat of a car pranks the other in the passenger seat by hitting them with a bag after reaching for it in the backseat. The videos became popular on both TikTok and Twitter in May 2020.

Origin

On May 14th, 2020, TikToker @abbieherbert_ uploaded the first known Purse Challenge video in which she hits her unsuspecting husband twice with a bag and then a cooler (shown below). The video garnered over 55,900 likes in two weeks.

Spread

On May 15th, 2020, Twitter user @kamrynjadeeee shared a TikTok purse challenge video and said, "She smacked tf outta him with that purse" (shown below). The video gained over 8.7 million views, 114,500 likes and 115,000 retweets in two weeks.

On May 17th, TikToker @vibeswithlouis uploaded a prank video using both the #pursechallenge and #bagchallenge hashtags (shown below, left). The video received over 145,900 likes in 11 days. On May 20th, TikToker @lovesoreal posted a variation where she climbed in the backseat hitting the passenger in the face with her behind on the way (shown below, center). The video accumulated over 123,600 likes in eight days. On May 22nd, TikToker @anissiakarissa posted another popular example that gained over 258,900 likes in six days (shown below, right). StayHipp,^[1] Distractify^[2] and Junkee^[3] published articles on the trend.
