About
Protein Bor is an intentional misspelling of "protein bar" that's spammed in TikTok comments as a way of poking fun at the way Irish TikToker James Doyle pronounces "protein bar." The catchphrase became a prevalent, spammable comment and copypasta in July 2022.
Origin
Irish TikToker James Doyle (@jamesdoylefitness) focuses primarily on fitness-based content[1] and will often review food items such as protein shakes and protein bars (example shown below). Though it's unclear when people on TikTok first started commenting "Protein Bor" on his videos, Protein Bor comments on the above video are dated to July 16th, 2022, which also aligns with the search interest on Google for the term.[2]
Spread
In mid-July 2022, "protein bor" grew outside of Doyle's fanbase and began being commented on a seemingly random assortment of TikTok videos as a form of spam. On July 18th, 2022, TikToker @maxbrownyo posted a video voicing his confusion with the developing trend, gaining over 20,000 likes in two days (shown below, left). The same day, Doyle acknowledged he'd started the trend in a TikTok that gained over 1.1 million views in two days (shown below, right).
The following day, July 19th, Doyle then made a stitched video with @maxbrownyo's clip commenting on the developing confusion, gaining over 192,000 likes in one day (shown below).
