About

Prolly Not refers to jokes and memes made in reference to a viral video on TikTok by user @sethshyrock in July 2022 in which he acts out an interaction between a distraught boyfriend and a doctor. The TikToker can be seen asking about the well-being of his girlfriend and asking if she's going to "make it," to which the doctor responds with "prolly not," with @sethshyrock then promptly breaking into the Taylor Swift song "Don't Blame Me." The TikToker's decision to give the doctor such a casual cadence led to other users making jokes about the kind of doctor that might say "prolly not" when asking about a patient.

Origin

Sometime in early July 2022, TikToker[1] @sethshyrock posted a POV-style video showing him tearfully asking the doctor, "doc… is she gonna make it?" to which he shows the doctor responding with, "Prolly not." The post gathered an unknown number of views and likes before it was deleted (repost shown below).

The earliest known notable stitch with the video is a July 3rd, 2022, post from TikToker[2] @thelukecook, who plays the role of the kind of doctor that might say "prolly not" when asked if their patient will survive. The post gathered over 24 million plays and 4 million likes in two years (seen below).

Spread

On July 7th, 2022, TikToker[3] @emilygrosser stitched the original POV video and played the role of a doctor who makes heavy use of slang while talking to his patients. The post gathered over 8 million plays and 600,000 likes in two years. On August 18th, TikToker[4] @mooshu2k's posted a similar video, gathering over 7.3 million plays and 1 million likes in two years (seen below, right).

The video came to be referenced on TikTok in subsequent years, as seen in a September 24th, 2023 post by TikToker[5] @julialillianrose where she shows off a print of @sethshyrock's TikTok. The post gathered over 900,000 views and 200,000 likes in seven months (seen below, left).

On February 9th, 2024, TikToker[6] @coixxii posted a video of her playing Taylor Swift's album "Reputation" on vinyl, speeding up the song "Don't Blame Me" to match the pace at which it appeared in @sethshyrock's TikTok. The caption read, "Doc is she gonna make it? Prolly not ahh vinyl." The post gathered over 2 million plays and 400,000 likes in two months (seen below, right).
