Princess Diana Jeon Jungkook Reincarnation Theory is a fan theory that suggests Princess Diana, who died on August 31st, 1997, was reincarnated as K-pop singer Jeon Jungkook, born on September 1st that year. Launched by Twitter user @blkbangtan, the conspiracy theory gained major virality within the BTS fandom, spawning jokes, memes and discussions throughout 2022, particularly around Queen Elizabeth II's death in September that year.

Origin

On April 11th, 2022, Twitter[1] user @blkerbangtan made a thread in which they shared their theory that Princess Diana, who died on August 31st, 1997, was reincarnated as South Korean K-pop singer Jeon Jungkook, born on September 1st, 1997. In the thread, @blkerbangtan brought up similar personality traits in the two as supporting evidence for the theory (original post no longer available, thread shown below).

Spread

On April 11th, 2022, Twitter user @bluegreyed made a tweet referencing the theory (shown below, left), with Twitter[2] user @tgkclu6 posting a screenshot of their tweet and commenting, "There’s layers to this one." The post (shown below, right) gained over 2,300 retweets and 15,400 likes in five months.

Later on April 11th, Twitter[3] user @minfile posted screenshots of Princess Diana's date of death and Jeon Jungkook's date of birth, with the post gaining over 7,000 retweets and 59,300 likes in five months.

The theory received a viral surge in popularity in late August 2022 as the BTS fandom brought it up soon before Princess Diana's death anniversary and Jeon Jungkook's birthday. On August 30th, Twitter[4] user @blvesidejk made a tweet that received over 6,300 retweets and 45,800 likes in 10 days (shown below, left).

On September 8th, during the Queen Elizabeth II health scare that was shortly followed by her death, Twitter[5] user @blvesidejk made a joke post that suggested that Princess Diana took over Jungkook's body to witness the Queen's death. The tweet gained over 11,000 retweets and 61,800 likes in four days (shown below, right).

The tweet prompted viral interest in the theory as more memes exploring the topic followed in the next several hours.
