POV: You're About to Hear the Worst Take Ever refers to a series of ad hominem memes that pair images of certain people or groups of people accompanied with the claim that any opinion expressed by them would be the worst opinion ever said. A subset of POV memes, the format has seen steady use on Twitter, iFunny and other social media since late 2020.

Origin

POV memes about people and groups of people with specific profile pictures expressing bad opinions have been shared online at least since late 2020. For example, on December 7th, 2020, Twitter^[1] user @yung__mean posted a meme about a person with a Christopher Moltisanti profile picture making unqualified takes about basketball (shown below, left). On February 8th, 2021, Twitter^[2] user @brooke_sp6 made a tweet about people wearing short sleeve shirts, goatees and Pit Viper sunglasses sharing the worst tweets (shown below, center). On February 24th, 2021, Twitter^[3] user @goblinshoes shared a viral tweet that gained over 3,200 retweets and 60,700 likes in one year (shown below, right).

Spread

The format saw continuous spread online through 2021 and 2022, primarily on Twitter and iFunny. In April 2021, an object-labeling meme based on an image of a wizard making a potion went viral on Tumblr,^[4] gaining over 46,000 likes and reblogs in one year (shown below, left). On August 29th, 2021, Twitter^[5] user @viperwave posted a meme about MaximillianMus' subscribers that gained 33 retweets and over 860 likes in seven months (shown below, center). On January 11th, 2022, Twitter^[6] user @zuza_real posted a meme that gained over 440 retweets and 7,700 likes in two months (shown below, right).

In early 2022, a meme depicting streamers and YouTubers Ethan Klein, HasanAbi, Vaush and Anthony Fantano went viral on social media,^[7][8] often being shared in response to their social media posts in the following months (shown below).
