About

Pour Some Sugar On May refers to a mondegreen featured in the 1987 song "Pour Some Sugar on Me" by Def Leppard. Since 2017, various image macros and videos in which people pour sugar on top of a calendar showing the month of May after they misheard the lyrics have appeared online. The misheard lyrics have been circulating on the web, particularly during the end of April and the first week of May, getting a resurgence on platforms like TikTok in the 2020s. The meme is used almost identically to "It's Gonna Be May."

Origin

On September 8th, 1987, the English rock band Def Leppard[1] released the song "Pour Some Sugar on Me" from their 1987 album Hysteria. The music was uploaded to YouTube on August 27th, 2012, amassing over 128 million views and 683,000 likes in 12 years. (shown below)

On May 5th, 2017, X[2] user @Korosuzo84 posted a picture of a ripped sugar packet on top of a calendar showing the month of May (shown below), which pokes at the misheard "Pour Some Sugar on Me" lyrics. The post did not receive significant engagement but is the earliest known example of the meme.

Spread

The misheard lyric joke was popularized further over the following years, typically resurfacing in the early weeks of May annually. For example, on May 3rd, 2021, the official X[3] account of the English rock band Def Leppard posted a version of the meme showing a pack of sugar on top of a calendar, adding the macro "Pour Some [sugar] On May." The post (shown below, left) received more than 2,200 likes and 370 reposts in three years.

On May 3rd, 2019, the Facebook[4] page @995TheFox posted a similar joke with the sugar and calendar picture (shown below, right), which received roughly 10 likes in five years.

TikTokers also posted jokes about the misheard lyrics in May, like user @tylerharrison58,[5] who recorded a video on May 2nd, 2021, putting a spoon of sugar over the May calendar page. The post (shown below, left) amassed over 500,000 plays and 25,600 likes in three years.

On May 1st, 2024, TIkTok[6] user @yourfriendashby posted a similar video (shown below, right), which received roughly 675 plays and 20 likes in a day.
