Pochita

About

Pochita is a minor Devil character in the manga series Chainsaw Man and its anime adaptation. A Devil who embodies the fear of chainsaws, Pochita is a pet of the main protagonist Denji who becomes his heart after he gets mortally wounded. Pochita looks, acts and behaves like a dog, with the exception of a large chainsaw blade protruding from its head, a handlebar on its back and a pull cord as its tail. Since Pochita's introduction in late 2018, the character has become widely popular within the fandom and gathered a significant amount of memes and fan art over the years.

Origin

On December 3rd, 2018, chapter one, titled "Dog & Chainsaw," of the Chainsaw Man manga series, created by Tatsuki Fujimoto, was released.^[1] In the chapter, the character Pochita, a Devil who embodies the fear of chainsaws and who appears as an orange dog with a functional chainsaw blade protruding from its head, is first introduced (example panels shown below).

In the manga series, Pochita is a pet and the only friend of the protagonist Denji. In the very first chapter of the manga, Pochita becomes Denji's heart, fusing with him and granting him its powers, in exchange for Denji showing it more of his dreams.

As Chainsaw Man achieved a viral presence online in 2020 and 2021, Pochita became one of its best-recognized characters and achieved major popularity within the fandom, becoming prominent in both fan art and memes. For example, on November 7th, 2021, content creator KinoFabino tweeted^[2] a crossover Doom meme that gained over 1,500 retweets and 10,800 likes in one year (shown below, left). On November 22nd of that year, Twitter^[3] user @c_h_a_m_p_i_8 posted a meme that gained over 24,700 retweets and 156,000 likes in the same period (shown below, right).

Following the release of the anime adaptation on October 11th, 2022, the character achieved even further virality. For example, on October 13th, artist @silverfox5213 tweeted^[4] a drawing that gained over 17,400 retweets and 115,000 likes in three weeks (shown below, left). On October 19th, artist @Chierri_xo tweeted^[5] a Kirby Transformation meme that gained over 22,000 retweets and 119,200 likes in two weeks (shown below, right).
