Pissy Shitties

About

Pissy Shitties, alternatively spelled Pissy Shittys, is a slang term referring to a mixture of popcorn and Pepsi, specifically, Pepsi poured into a bucket of movie theatre popcorn. The idea was first shared in a post to Tumblr in 2016 where user bighuge claims mixing popcorn and Pepsi is a common thing in the United States, causing confusion for non-American users and inspiring various memes over the following years. Some substitute Pepsi for a soft drink of their choice, however, the original pissy shitty is made with Pepsi. It is similar to other purposely gross drink mixtures like Sproke and Pilk.

Origin

On January 21st, 2016, Tumblr^[1] user oddbagel posted, "The weirdest thing about the UK is that they don’t clap at the end of movie trailers. What the fuck." Shortly after, user bighuge reblogged the post, adding "not to mention the fact that they don’t pour their pepsis into their buckets of popcorn and eat the resulting mush, known as 'pissy shitties' here in the good ol US of A." The reply thread continued after this for numerous messages, some showing confusion and asking for more details about pissy shitties and some adding to the pissy shitty hoax. For example, user chaos-has-arrived added, "Here in the USA, most theaters sell buckets meant specifically for pissy shitties, called piss buckets, which are usually around like $30 – $40. Some Americans like the feeling of leaky buckets on their jeans and consider it a part of the theater experience like post-credit brawls and sticky floors. I agree with the latter tbh." The post gained over 160,000 notes in five years (shown below, click to expand).

Spread

On August 8th, 2019, Twitter^[5] user @krakensoup posted a Metal Gear themed comic about pissy shitties, gaining over 480 likes and 200 retweets in two years (shown below).

On June 22nd, 2020 Redditor Coinocus posted to /r/TooAfraidToAsk^[3] wondering if pissy shitties was a real thing Americans enjoy. On July 30th, "pissy shitties" was then defined on Urban Dictionary.^[2]

On March 8th, 2021, Tumblr^[4] userdrustvars posted an image of a cocktail version of pissy shitties made of a rum and coke float mixed with vanilla ice cream and caramel corn (shown below).

Since the post a number of people have attempted to make and try pissy shitties, often finding them unfavorable (examples shown below, left and right).
