About
Pish Pish refers to a WhatsApp sticker of a cleaning product (Cristasol Cristalino) purposely blurred and paired with the overlay text "pish pish," which is a Portuguese onomatopoeia for the splashing sound the spraying product does. The meme is used as a reaction image in the message application when a person wants to push someone away or is being ignored. The sticker became popularized among Brazilians in a series of screenshot videos of WhatsApp conversations posted on TikTok in late August 2023.
Origin
The author of the pish pish sticker is unknown, but the earliest mention of the image was posted on August 10th, 2023, by X[1] user @saquinhodelixo. The meme page shared a cropped screenshot (shown below) of a WhatsApp chat in which the image of the spray bottle was used as a reaction sticker, garnering 3,400 likes and 216 retweets in four months.
Spread
The sticker became progressively more prevalent in late October 2023 after TikTok users started to share the image in a series of videos showing the sticker's usage in random conversations. For instance, on October 27th, 2023, TikTok[2] user @fzz0ck shared a screenshot message with a friend in which he said he doesn't have cute stickers to share, only the pish pish image. The post (shown below, left) amassed more than 781,000 likes plays and 191,000 likes in two weeks.
On November 9th, TikTok[3] user @i.love.animes5 posted a video celebrating finally finding the pish pish sticker. The post (shown below, right) received more than 19,000 plays and 315 likes in two days.
