About

Pikachu and Eevee Haircuts refer to jokes made about a feature in the upcoming Pokémon: Let's Go! games which allows players to give the mascots of the respective games, Pikachu and Eevee, different hair styles. Social media users joked about the designs, particularly the bangs style on each Pokémon.

Origin

On July 12th, 2018, Nintendo released a trailer for their upcoming Pokémon Let's Go! games. The trailer showed some features of the upcoming games, including the inclusion of familiar characters from the anime series. The trailer also demonstrated how characters could select haircut styles for their chosen starter Pokémon (shown below).

Spread

After the trailer's release, social media users immediately joked about the haircut feature. Twitter user @SNatent joked that Officer Jenny would take the Pokémon away from you if you gave them bangs, gaining over 970 retweets and 3,100 likes (shown below, left). User @ConnieKuroi joked about Eevee with bangs, gaining over 130 retweets and 800 likes (shown below, right).

In general, most of the jokes surrounding the haircut feature centered around the bangs. Kotaku[1] wrote an article comparing the Pokémon bangs to famous celebrities who have and have not been successful, in their view, of pulling off the haircut. Social media users also made celebrity comparisons, most of which were unflattering. User @redketchup80 posted a comparison between Pikachu and Jim Carrey from Dumb and Dumber, gaining over 350 retweets and 1,100 likes (shown below, left). User @praisejeebus did the same with a picture of Beyoncé with bangs, gaining over 2,000 retweets and 7,800 likes (shown below, right). Jokes about the haircuts were covered by Twitter Moments.[2]
