About

Picky Kids Trick-or-Treating, also known as Candy With Fentanyl, Please, refers to a single-panel webcomic depicting a group of children trick-or-treating on Halloween and asking a woman handing out candy to cater to their dietary preferences and restrictions. Posted in 2013, the comic has been humorously recaptioned in memes as an exploitable format in which people alter the speech bubbles from the children.

Origin

On October 31st, 2013, a Halloween-themed comic of the "Reality Check" daily comic strip by cartoon artist Dave Whamond was published[1] (shown below). The single-panel cartoon depicts a group of children dressed in Halloween costumes announcing their dietary restrictions and preferences to a woman handing out candy, with one kid asking for "gender neutral candy."

Through the 2010s and 2020s, the cartoon has frequently been reposted online, primarily on Facebook.[2][3][4]

Prior to October 14th, 2019, an unknown user posted the earliest found edit of the comic, an Eating Ass recaption meme. On that day, X[5] / Twitter user @claytoncubitt reposted the image.

On October 15th, Redditor Junibeee then reposted the edit in the /r/boomershumor[6] subreddit, where it received over 2,600 upvotes in five years. Later on October 15th, X[7] user @dalisayMT made a repost using it, which garnered over 10,000 reposts and 34,000 likes in the same period.

Spread

The edit saw viral spread online in the following months as it was reposted on Reddit[8] and other sites.

On October 30th, 2022, Tumblr[9] user ouua recaptioned the speech bubbles with requests for "candy with fentanyl" with the edit (shown below) gaining over 3,800 upvotes in the /r/okbuddyretard[9] subreddit in two years and being widely circulated online.

The edit inspired more memes as it was this version was recaptioned further. For example, on October 30th, 2023, Tumblr[10] user bruno-has-definitely posted an edit that garnered over 25,000 likes and reblogs in roughly a year (shown below).
