Peter Griffin's Drowning Confession, also known as "I Did Not Care for X," refers to a series of image caption and image macro memes based on a scene of the Family Guy character Peter Griffin admitting that he did not like the movie The Godfather as he and his family were about to drown. Online, a still image paired with the phrasal template "I Did Not Care for X" achieved virality in the 2020s, typically being used to share unpopular opinions.

Origin

On May 14th, 2006, episode 27 titled "Untitled Griffin Family History* of season four of the animated comedy series Family Guy premiered.^[1] In one scene of the episode, the character Peter Griffin and his family are locked inside a panic room that is slowly filling up with water from the sprinklers. With the room nearly filled up, Peter makes a confession that he didn't like the universally acclaimed movie The Godfather, elaborating that he thinks that "it insists upon itself" (scene shown below).

But since we're all gonna die, there's one more secret I feel I have to share with you. I did not care for The Godfather. […] It insists upon itself, Lois.

On May 28th, 2020, iFunny^[2] user becauselm_animal posted the earliest found meme based on the scene (shown below, left), which did not get significant traction (earlier instances of use are likely to exist). On December 31st, 2020, iFunny^[3] user wide posted the earliest found notable version of the meme that received over 380 smiles on the app in three years (shown below. right).

Spread

The format saw a gradual spread online throughout early 2021, first on iFunny and later on Twitter and other websites. For example, on January 17th, 2021, Twitter^[4] user @RANK10YGO used the format to comment on the popularity of Lady Dimitrescu, with the post gaining over 40 retweets and 490 likes in two years (shown below, left). On April 6th, 2021, iFunny user SawgESwag shared a version mentioning DaBaby memes, with the post gaining over 1,100 smiles in two years (shown below, right).

The format maintained its presence through 2022 and 2023, with its popularity being assisted by viral posts praising the writing of the scene.^[5][6] Multiple versions of the meme in which users expressed their unpopular onions gained significant traction online; for example, on February 11th, 2023, Twitter^[7] user @jjguy_ posted a redraw that received over 220 retweets and 2,700 likes in five months (shown below, left).
