Pepsi Dog or Funny Dog Eat a Pepsi refers to a viral photograph of a dog named Peanut drinking a cup of Pepsi from a straw. The exploitable photo was first uploaded to Flickr in 2005 and gained viral spread over the following years, inspiring photoshops and memes of the dog. Another image of a dog drinking Pepsi from a can also went viral in the years following.

Origin

On September 12th, 2005, Flickr^[1] user shirleymoon published a photograph of a yellow lab named Peanut, titled "Peanut asks for more…." who appears to be drinking Pepsi from a straw, garnering over 4,600 views and 80 favorites in 17 years (shown below). Her page includes numerous photos of Peanut and her sister, Sesame, including puppy photographs.

Spread

The image saw viral spread over the following years. On November 22nd, 2014, Redditor FastLoad posted the photo to /r/photoshopbattles,^[2] resulting in over 2,300 upvotes and 160 comments in eight years, including numerous photoshops of the image (examples shown below).

On April 15th, 2015, an Imgur^[3] user uploaded an image macro showing an image of an angry dog next to Pepsi dog, captioned, "Girls before and after you feed them lol," garnering over 6,400 upvotes in seven years (shown below). The meme was recreated by Twitter^[4] user @fillwerrell that day, garnering over 4,900 likes in the same span of time. On April 28th, musician Sean Kingston shared the meme on Facebook,^[5] garnering over 2,200 shares and 14,000 reactions.

On November 14th, Tumblr^[6] user funny-dog-eat-a-pepsi made a post showing three images of different dogs drinking Pepsi, given titles of "the father," "the son" and "the holy spirit," garnering over 171,000 notes in seven years (shown below, left). On August 18th, 2022, Tumblr^[7] user sandmandaddy69 posted a version of the meme that gained over 12,000 notes in four months (shown below, right). On December 6th, TikToker^[8] @tv.wishes posted the original photos and explained their origins in a slideshow post garnering over 1.2 million views in two weeks.

Alternative Pepsi Dogs

On March 27th, 2011, a Redditor uploaded an image of a puppy drinking Pepsi to /r/ pics,^[9] garnering over 340 upvotes in 11 years (shown below, left). In 2015, another image of a dog drinking Pepsi, this time directly from the can, started to gain viral spread online. It is unknown where it was originally uploaded, although it was uploaded to Tumblr several times that year according to TinEye^[10] (shown below, right).
