PepeJAM is an animated Twitch emote featuring an illustration of Pepe the Frog wearing headphones while bobbing his head. On Twitch chat, the emote is often used in the context of reacting to music.
Origin
The exact origin of the emote is unknown. According to Redditor RoastedCat23, the emote "was originally meant for ironically enjoying bad music" but was later used for electronic music.[4]
Spread
On January 11th, 2018, the emote was added to the DiscordEmoji database.[2] On October 11th, a Change.org[3] petition titled "Re-enable pepeJAM," which called for Twitch streamer xQc to add the pepeJAM emote back to his stream chat. On November 18th, the Livestream Compilation YouTube channel uploaded a video featuring the animated pepeJAM emote (shown below).
On March 15th, 2019, Redditor Juny1spion submitted an illustration of the PepeJAM emote to /r/forsen[1] (shown below, left). On March 18th, Redditor IQEDWARD posted a photograph of a tree frog with two snails on its head with the title "Real pepeJAM :O" to /r/cellbits (shown below, right).
