The clip come from a video posted by The Muppets Facebook page in October 2011 and first became the subject of memes on TikTok in late December 2024, with a green screen being uploaded to the platform in January 2025, further inspiring memes. As a meme, Pepe's laugh is used alongside an anecdote to represent someone laughing.

Origin

On October 25th, 2011, as a promotion for the November release of The Muppets Movie, The Muppets Facebook^[1] page posted a short video of Pepe the King Prawn walking onto camera and laughing, followed by text advertising a "Muppets fan-a-thon," garnering over 1,600 views in 14 years.

On December 31st, 2024, TikToker^[2] @me.bryan posted a video using a green screen of the clip, in which Pepe walks into a bathroom and laughs under the caption, "me walking by the mirror after a night of drinking to go pee and getting a glimpse of how hammered I am," garnering over 2.1 million views in a week. This is the earliest known example of the meme.

Spread

The meme garnered viral spread on TikTok in January 2025. On January 2nd, 2025, TikToker^[3] @alyshafrizzell posted a version of the meme reading, "Me knowing I now have inmunity at work because I caught my manager doing things they're not supposed to so now they can't write me up either. If I go down, you're going down with me," garnering over 500,000 views in a week.

On January 3rd, TikToker^[4] @memescreens posted a green screen of the meme, garnering around 9,500 views in six days.

On January 5th, TikToker^[5] @eb_riv posted a version of the meme captioned, "Me home alone laughing at my own jokes like a psycho," garnering over 1.5 million views in four days.
