Pepe Silvia Charlie Explaining to a Seal is an exploitable image macro series depicting Charlie Kelly from It’s Always Sunny In Philidelphia explaining something to a rotund seal. The format is typically used by assigning various object labels to each character in the top and bottom panels, where the seal essentially does what it wants despite the pleas in the above frame. The top frame uses the Pepe Silvia meme, while the bottom features a seal photoshopped with human hands. In mid-October 2020, the format was widely used on Reddit and Tumblr.

Origin

The original clip that the top frame of the meme is pulled from is seen during the episode "Sweet Dee Has a Heart Attack," which first aired on October 30th, 2008 (seen below, left). The image of the seal named Yuki^[7] in the bottom frame was originally posted to Reddit^[1] on May 21st, 2019, without the added hands (seen below, right).

The earliest known example of these two images being used as a meme format comes from a post by Redditor winkysocks21, who shared a meme to the /r/memes^[2] subreddit on October 15th, 2020, receiving over 75,800 upvotes, 270 comments and numerous Reddit awards in five days (shown below).

Spread

The format continued to spread in the following days, appearing primarily on Reddit. On October 16th, 2020, Redditor scoopedicecream posted another example to the /r/dankmemes^[3] sub with Charlie edited to appear larger, receiving over 22,300 upvotes, 51 comments and several Reddit awards in four days (seen below, left). Later that day, Redditor Immemephilosopher posted a variant to the /r/dankmemes^[4] sub with their face edited over the seal’s, receiving over 52,300 upvotes, 372 comments and numerous Reddit awards in four days (seen below, right).

On October 17th, the meme spread to Tumblr^[5] and was posted by dankmemeuniversity, accumulating over 1,100 notes in three days (shown below, left). That same day, Tumblr^[6] user keiradawn42 posted another example of the meme to their page, accumulating over 940 notes in three days (shown below, right).
