About

Tony Zaret is an Instagram, Twitter and TikTok creator who's most known for his overtly cringeworthy memes and sketches that are ironic in nature. Although Zaret's been active online since 2009 on Twitter, he didn't start posting the ironic content he's known for today until early 2015. Many of his sketches are centered around bridging the gap between Millennial and Gen Z cultural differences and stereotypes. He also has a presence on both Tumblr and YouTube.

Online History

Tony Zaret's online presence dates back to January 14th, 2009, when he posted his first tweet.[1] However, Zaret didn't post his first image macro meme until March 29th, 2014, on his Instagram[2] account. The meme (shown below) is a faked text conversation between Zaret and a character named JimJam. After being posted seven years ago, it has received 147 likes.

Zaret posted his first video sketch to Instagram[3] on January 26th, 2015 (almost a year after the image macro above). The sketch (shown below) is an ironic "snow report" where Zaret is talking in his spacey, comedic cadence that would later define his video style. The post received 93 likes after being posted.

On his Twitter, Zaret started posting original, image macro memes on June 9th, 2015, when the meme (shown below, left) was tweeted.[4] The tweet received two likes. He posted a follow-up image macro to his Twitter[5] on July 1st, 2015, (shown below, right). It received 14 likes after being posted and was also put on his Instagram,[6] where it received 153 likes.

On May 15th, 2018, Zaret posted his first YouTube[7] video titled, "Tony Zaret Channel Trailer." The video (shown below) amassed roughly 6,300 views and 448 likes over the course of three years.

Also in 2018, Zaret launched his TikTok page, posting his first TikTok[8] on July 8th, 2018, when the app was still called Musical.ly. The video (shown below) received 872 plays and 75 likes over three years.

Zaret received the most amount of engagement across all of his social media platforms in 2020 on his Instagram account, where he continued to post ironic exploitables that generally poked fun at hustle culture memes as well as inspirational / woke photo-quotes, infographics and political cartoons. For instance, his most-liked post on Instagram[9] was uploaded on July 19th, 2020 (shown below). It received roughly 41,600 likes over the course of a year and a half.

Additionally, Zaret was interviewed in a YouTube[10] video posted on November 6th, 2018, by the channel Hatched (shown below). Starting at the 12:10 timestamp, Zaret begins a roughly four minute interview where he talks about himself and his work. The video has received 2,500 views over three years' time.

Zaret also started his own subreddit[11] called r/TonyZaretOfficial on January 14th, 2019. It has roughly 9,100 members as of December 2021. Overall though, Zaret's largest following is on his Instagram,[12] where he's amassed roughly 107,000 followers over six years of posting. In contrast, his Twitter[13] has roughly 23,200 followers as of December 2021.

Bajookieland

Bajookieland is an imaginary country that was made up by Instagram and TikTok meme creator Tony Zaret. Bajookieland is located in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean and has the neighboring countries of Bajonkistan and Bajonkistan 2 (which are rivals of Bajookieland). The people of Bajookieland, known as the Bajookanese, speak their own language consisting of many "oo" and "u" sounds. Also, the Bajookanese flag is orange, green and blue with a red spiral shape in its middle that resembles a sun. After Tony Zaret spawned Bajookieland in mid-2022, he and other meme creators invented different facets of Bajookieland's culture, such as the food "grum grum," creating an ironic and nonsensical meme.
