Theresa May is a British politician and the outgoing Prime Minister of the United Kingdom. She rose to the office of Prime Minister, following the referendum vote that decided that the United Kingdom would withdraw from the European Union, also known as Brexit, and former Prime Minister David Cameron resigned. Following three years of parliamentary gridlock surrounding May's Brexit plan, she announced her resignation.

Online History

Theresa May came to national prominence in the United Kingdom in 2010, when she was appointed Home Secretary and Minister for Women and Equalities. Holding various offices for the next five years or so.

In 2016, David Cameron stepped down following the Brexit referendum vote that refocused the government's efforts to withdraw from the European Union.

On June 30th, 2016, Theresa May tweeted^[3] her first tweet, launching her campaign for prime minister (shown below).

On April 7th, 2019, Prime Minister of the United Kingdom Theresa May published a video on to the UK Prime Minister Twitter account (@10DowningStreet) explaining the situation that has been going on with Brexit in the last few weeks.

In the video, Theresa May explains the situation that the country is in and what the next steps the government were planning to go through. The video received over 2,100 likes and over 930 retweets.

Theresa May's Jam Gaffe

On February 13th, 2019, British Prime Minister Theresa May gave an example of how to combat food waste during a cabinet meeting. The Daily Mail UK reported, "She also said food shouldn’t be binned just because it is past its best before date, saying shoppers should use ‘common sense’ to check if it is edible."^[2] The Daily Mail UK^[1] posted a Tweet of their article with the caption "Theresa May: I scrape mould off jam and eat what's underneath" (shown below, left). The tweet gained 290 retweets and 622 likes in one day. The top comments include "weird flex but ok" among other (shown below, right).

Resignation

On May 24th, 2019, Theresa May announced her resignation from the office of prime minister. She said, "I feel as certain today as I did three years ago that in a democracy, if you give people a choice you have a duty to implement what they decide. I have done my best to do that. I have done everything I can to convince MPs to back that deal. Sadly, I have not been able to do so."^[4]

Following her announcement, supporters and detractors of May expressed their opinions on her tenure. British politician and Brexit movement leader Boris Johnson tweeted,^[5] "A very dignified statement from @theresa_may. Thank you for your stoical service to our country and the Conservative Party. It is now time to follow her urgings: to come together and deliver Brexit." The tweet received more than 1,500 retweets and 8,000 likes in 24 hours (shown below, left).

Labour Party leader Jeremy Corbyn tweeted,^[6] "Theresa May is right to resign. She's now accepted what the country's known for months: she can't govern, and nor can her divided and disintegrating party. Whoever becomes the new Tory leader must let the people decide our country’s future, through an immediate General Election." Within 24 hours, the tweet received more than 9,000 retweets and 30,000 likes (shown below, right).
