Terri Joe

Overview

Terri Joe, sometimes misspelled Terry Joe, is a character played by TikToker Psyiconic (@_itzpsyiconic_) or Kelon portrayed as a judgemental, mixed-race southern Christian woman. Psyiconic began going on TikTok live streams as a variety of comedic characters in 2020 and began portraying Terri Joe in March 2021, inviting people onto his live streams to talk with and roast them. Throughout 2022, the Terri Joe character became Psyiconic's most popular, seeing a significant boost in popularity when Doja Cat joined a live stream in April 2022. Psyiconic has spoken to numerous celebrities and influencers since, including Madonna, Hunter Schafer and Trisha Paytas.

History

According to an interview with Vulture,^[1] Psyiconic first started going live on TikTok in 2020, originally wearing a granny wig to prank people. He began to expand his characters over the following months, including characters like Jeorgia Peach and Amethyst Jade, gaining a following. During the interview, Psyiconic says his Terri Joe character is based on the "hillbilly racist, very judgmental Christian" characters on the show True Blood. The earliest apparent video on the @_itzpsyiconic_ TikTok^[2] page featuring Terri Joe was posted on March 10th, 2022, showing her getting flashed during a stream (shown below, left). Another clip was posted to TikTok^[3] on March 26th showing Joe asking a woman to repent, garnering over 318,000 views in 10 months (shown below, right).

Doja Cat Streams

On March 16th, 2022, Doja Cat joined one of Terri Joe's lives for the first time to have a roast battle with her. The video was clipped and uploaded to YouTube^[4] by Doja Rexha that day, garnering over 92,000 views in nine months (shown below, left). She joined one of Terri Joe's streams again on April 7th, which was reuploaded by the same YouTuber^[5] that day, garnering over 540,000 views in nine months (shown below, right). In his Vulture interview, Psyiconic says the Doja Cat appearances started a "snowball" effect of other famous people joining the lives.

Doja Cat has appeared on Terri Joe's lives numerous times since, including on May 9th,^[6] August 18th^[7] and December 27th, 2022.^[8]

Hunter Schafer Stream

In July 2022, actress and model Hunter Schafer, best known for her role in Eupohria, joined one of Terri Joe's streams. It was reuploaded to YouTube^[9] by Kyliegar1 that month, garnering over 9,900 views in six months (shown below).

Madonna Stream

On October 27th, 2022, pop musician Madonna joined one of Terri Joe's streams. The stream was reuploaded to YouTube^[10] by Dojabynicole that day, garnering over 87,000 views in three months (shown below).

James Charlies Stream

Sometimes in October 2022, James Charles, a frequent target of Terri Joe's, joined a live stream where she roasted him for being gay. The clip was uploaded to YouTube^[11] on October 29th, 2022 by LisaFromWalmart (shown below).

Trisha Paytas Stream

On December 29th, 2022, influencer Trisha Paytas joined one of Terri Joe's live streams. The video was reuploaded to YouTube^[12] the next day by P, garnering over 35,000 views in a month (shown below).

Psyiconic is active on TikTok^[13] @_itzpsyiconic_ with over 1.2 million followers and Instagram^[14] @_psyiconic_ with over 63,500 followers.

Reposts

Since most of Psyiconic's content is done through TikTok Live, it is often clipped and reposted online to sites like TikTok and YouTube, where some clips go viral. For example, on June 6th and 7th, 2022, YouTuber^[15][16] Mad Beefs posted two compilations of Terri Joe "dragging homosexuals," garnering over 346,000 and 287,000 views respectively in seven months (shown below).
