Tavi Gevinson is an American writer, fashion blogger and actress best known for starting the online teen magazine Rookie at age of twelve.

Online History

Tavi Gevinson created her fashion blog StyleRookie[3] on March 31st, 2008, when she was 12-years-old. Gevinson posted pictures of herself modeling fashionable outfits, which soon caught the eye of much bigger fashion blogs and sites.

On July 22nd that year, New York Magazine’s fashion blog The Cut[16] profiled Gevinson in an article titled “Meet Tavi, the 12-Year-Old Fashion Blogger.” On August 12th, she was featured in a USA Today[17] article titled “Young fashion bloggers are worrisome trend to parents.” On January 17th, 2009, AOL[18] named her a “Teen Internet Celebrity.” On September 17th, The Huffington Post[19] covered Gevinson’s trip to New York City's annual Fashion Week. In November 2010, Gevinson announced[20] that she would be launching an online teen magazine.

Rookie Magazine

On September 5th, 2011, Gevinson launched Rookie[13], an online teen magazine. Jane Pratt, the founder of XOJane, helped her to launch the digital magazine. The magazine puts up new content every month divided up into fourteen categories:

  • dear diary
  • you asked it
  • fiction
  • tech
  • eye candy
  • style
  • books and comics
  • sex and love
  • you said it
  • love
  • everything else

As of September 2014, the magazine’s Facebook page[15] has gained over 60,000 likes and its Twitter account[14] has gained over 72,000 followers. The magazine features two vlog series titled “Ask a Grown Woman” and “Ask a Grown Man” in which male and female celebrities answer questions submitted by Rookie’s teenage readers (shown below).

Acting Career

Gevinson made her on-screen debut[4] in the 2008 short film First Bass and her feature film debut in the 2013 romantic comedy film Enough Said. In 2014, she appeared in an episode of Parenthood and voiced a character in an episode of The Simpsons. On September 11th, 2014, Gevinson made her on-stage debut in the Broadway re-adaptation of This Is Our Youth.[5]

Social Media Presence

As of September 2014, Gevinson’s Twitter account[6] has gained over 260,000 followers and her Instagram account has gained over 200,000 followers. Her personal Tumblr blog Tulletulle[8] was created on March 25th, 2009.

Fans have created fan art and submitted it to DeviantArt. [9] Fan run Tumblr blogs dedicated to Gevinson include fuckyeahtavigevi[10] and tavisrookie.[12]
