Speedbag Bard is the online handle of a YouTuber and a punch drummer who uses a speed bag to cover popular songs, punching the bag to their rhythm. Playing the improvised instrument since June 2022 and uploading his videos to Instagram and YouTube, the cover artist achieved virality on social media in October 2024.
Online History
On March 15th, 2022, Instagram[1] user speedbagbard shared the first post on their account that featured two photographs of a speed bag platform he made from scratch. In the following months, speedbagbard made several more posts about assembling and installing their speedbag station and practicing with it.
On June 16th, 2022, speedbagbard posted their first punch drumming video in which they used the speed bag to cover a song. The video, a cover of "Viva la Vida" by Coldplay, received over 120 likes on Instagram[2] in two years (shown below).
In the following months, speedbagbard posted more speed bag covers of popular songs to Instagram, including covers of "Beggin'" by Madcon[3] and "Don't Stop Believing" by Journey.[4]
On November 23rd, 2022, the cover artist launched their YouTube channel Speedbag Bard, uploading their first video,[5] a speed bag cover of "CRASHER" by Daoko that gained over 1,100 views in two years (shown below).
In 2023 and 2024, Speedbag Bard continued to upload speed bag covers of popular songs. As of October 8th, 2024, a cover of "Chop Suey!" by System of a Down,[6] uploaded on September 2nd, 2024, is the most viral video on the channel with over 850,000 views accumulated in one month (shown below).
As of October 8th, 2010, Speedbag Bard had over 47,000 subscribers on YouTube.
Online Presence
In early October 2024, Speedbag Bard's channel saw a surge in popularity, presumably due to the YouTube Recommendation Algorithm, resulting in his content going viral.
On October 7th, 2024, X[7] user @Zetrow9 posted a 30-second clip from Speedbag Bard's cover of "FREDOM DiVE" from the rhythm game Osu!, with the post (shown below) gaining over 2,700 reposts and 21,000 likes in one day.
