Shein Factory Girl is a nickname given to social media influencer Dani DMC (@DaniDMC) who is known for her infamous sponsored trip to a Shein factory in China that sparked controversy online. After videos posted by several influencers promoting Shein and misrepresenting their unethical business practices went viral in June 2023, @DaniDMC came to be known on internet communities as the "Shein Factory Girl" with the nickname being frequently used in memes around mid-2023.

Dani DMC is a social media influencer, plus-sized model, and self-professed "confidence activist."^[1] As of July 2023, Dani has gathered over 300,000 followers on TikTok,^[2] 470,000 followers on Instagram^[3] and 53,000 subscribers on YouTube.^[4]

Shein Influencer Trip

Shein is an online retailer famous for selling clothing at very cheap prices. The company is known to have violated Chinese labor laws and committed human rights abuses, according to reporting from the BBC^[5] and other media outlets.

In June 2023, a group of influencers from Instagram and TikTok (including creators such as @itsdestene_, @danidmc and @itsjustajlove) was invited to the Shein factory in China as part of a partnership with the company where they met executives and toured the factories of Shein (seen below, left).^[6]

Dani DMC came to be known as "Shein Factory Girl" after she posted a response to the backlash against Shein and the influencer team, calling criticism of Shein "xenophobic" and "misinformed." She also shared that in the aftermath of the controversy around the Shein influencer visit, people online purportedly harassed and abused her (seen below, right).^[7]

Shein Factory Girl Nickname

Various online commentators began referring to Dani DMC as the "Shein Factory Girl" in subsequent discussions after the initial Shein controversy. On June 26th, 2023, Twitter^[8] user @ohlode reposted one of Dani DMC's TikTok videos in which she is shown promoting a robotic storage unit that follows her around. The post gathered over 15,000 likes in a month (seen below).

The post gathered over 9,000 likes in a month (seen below, left). On July 4th, 2023, Twitter^[10] user @cruelcruel222 posted a tweet that read, "she looks like the shein factory girl," gathering over 2,300 likes in three weeks (seen below, right).
