The Savannah Bananas are a minor league baseball team based out of Savannah, Georgia known for their on-field hijinks and viral videos. The team was founded in 2016 and has since won two Petitt Cup championships. In 2022, the team became increasingly popularized on TikTok for their comedy content.

History

On February 25th, 2016, the Savannah Bananas were announced as the newest team in the Coastal Plain League.^[1] The team was named through a contest. The team's colors are yellow and blue and their logo shows a banana with a baseball bat. On that day, the team posted a video to the official Savannah Bananas YouTube^[2] channel announcing the team (shown below).

The Bananas performed well in their first season, winning the Petit Cup in the CPL Championship.^[3] The team regularly posted videos to YouTube throughout the year, including a music video titled "Can't Stop the Peeling," gaining over 47,000 views in six years (shown below). The Savannah Bananas have managed to sell out all of their games since their inaugural season.^[4]

Wearing Kilts

As early as 2018, the Savannah Bananas have worn kilts during some games in the season.^[8] On March 18th, 2019, the team uploaded a video to YouTube where they talk about the decision to wear kilts, gaining over 68,500 views in three years (shown below).

2021 CPL Championship

The Savannah Bananas won the Petitt Cup for a second time in 2021 during the CPL Championship.^[13]

Online Presence

The Savannah Bananas have a large online presence, with over 420,000 followers on Instagram,^[5] 42,000 subscribers on YouTube,^[6] and 2.5 million followers on TikTok.^[7] On August 14th, 2021, the team uploaded a video to YouTube where they play a game of "Don’t Break the Ice" in the lockerroom, gaining over 950,000 views in nine months (shown below).

On August 22nd, 2021, ESPN posted a video to YouTube^[10] titled, "How the Savannah Bananas have become the greatest show in baseball," gaining over 285,000 views in nine months (shown below).

TikTok

The Savannah Bananas posted their first video to TikTok^[9] on February 14th, 2020. They posted regularly throughout the year, often performing viral dances and trends during games and posting footage of their on-field antics (examples shown below).

The team became increasingly popular on TikTok throughout 2022, with several videos going viral. On March 11th, 2022, they posted a video to TikTok^[11] where they drop low before a pitch, gaining over 16.3 million views in two months (shown below, left). On March 17th, they posted a video to TikTok^[12] where they do a Dirty Dancing move as a celebration, gaining over 9.9 million views in two months (shown below, right).

On April 9th, the team posted a video to TikTok^[16] where they perform a popular dance to the "Cool For The Summer x Hot In Here" remix during a game, gaining over 78.9 million views in a month (shown below).

On May 9th, Dexerto^[14] published an article calling the Bananas "TikTok’s favorite baseball team." On the same day, the Savannah Bananas posted a video to TikTok^[15] where they do their best "Jack Sparrow runs" during a game, gaining over 1.3 million views in a day (shown below).
