About

Mister Rogers is the nickname given to American television personality Fred Rogers, who is best known for hosting the children's public television series Mister Rogers' Neighborhood.

Career

In 1951, Rogers was hired at the National Broadcasting Company (NBC), where he worked as a producer for the NBC Opera Theater and a children's show hosted by actor George Hayes. Rogers left NBC in 1954 to work at the Pittsburgh public television station WQED as a puppeteer for the children's show The Children's Corner. Starting in 1968, Rogers hosted the children's television show Mister Rogers' Neighborhood, which ran for 895 episodes until 2001. The show would begin with Rogers' singing the theme song "It's a Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood" while changing into his signature zippered cardigan and sneakers (shown below). Most episodes were educational in nature and featured Rogers interacting with live guests, visiting various locations and showing short films.

Online Presence

On June 29th, 2007, the BotJunkie YouTube channel uploaded footage of Rogers appearing in front of the United States Senate Subcommittee on Communications to defend the funding of PBS (shown below, left). Within nine years, the video gained over 2.4 million views and 4,700 comments. On March 26th, 2008, the Emmys YouTube channel uploaded Rogers' acceptance speech for the Lifetime Achievement Award at the 1997 Emmy Awards ceremony (shown below, right). Within seven years, the video received more than two million views.

On September 14th, 2011, YouTuber Nice Peter posted an Epic Rap Battle between Mister T and Mister Rogers (shown below). In the next five years, the video gained over 67 million views and 296,000 comments. On July 7th, 2012, PBS Digital Studio released a music video remix featuring autotuned clips from Mister Rogers' Neighborhood (shown below, right). On March 28th, 2015, the /r/TheChurchOfRogers^[3] subreddit was launched for fans of Mister Rogers' Neighborhood.

Personal Life

Fred Rogers was born on March 20th, 1928 in Latrobe, Pennsylvania. After earning a B.A. in Music Composition at Dartmouth College, Rogers graduated from the Pittsburgh Theological Seminary and was subsequently ordained as as minister. While many rumors circulated that he served in the United States Marine Corps, Rogers did not serve in the military. On February 27th, 2003, Rogers died at the age of 74 due to complications from stomach cancer.
