About

Matthew McConaughey is an American actor who has received critical acclaim for his performances in a number of films and television shows, most notably including Dallas Buyers Club, Interstellar and True Detective.

History

McConaughey made his acting debut in the 1993 comedy film Dazed and Confused, in which he portrays David Wooderson, a man in his early 20s who socializes with high school students (shown below, left). In July 1996, the film A Time to Kill was released, in which McConaughey plays Jake Brigance, a defense attorney representing Carl Lee Hailey (played by Samuel L. Jackson) in a murder trial (shown below, right).

In the 2000s, McConaughey starred in many romantic comedy films, including The Wedding Planner (2001), How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days (2003), Failure to Launch (2006), Fool's Gold (2008) and Ghosts of Girlfriends Past (2009). In November 2013, the biographical drama film Dallas Buyers Club was released, in which McConaughey stars as the HIV positive rodeo cowboy Ron Woodroof, who smuggled unapproved AIDS treatment medications into Texas. McConaughey received the Best Actor award for the performance at the 86th Academy Awards.

True Detective

On January 12th, 2014, True Detective premiered on HBO, introducing Rustin Cohle (played by Matthew McConaughey) and Martin Hart (played by Woody Harrelson) as two homicide detectives investigating a case of serial murders in Louisiana over the course of 17 years. The show is presented as an anthology series with each season featuring a unique cast of characters and self-contained storyline.

Interstellar

In November 2014, the film Interstellar was released, in which McConaughey stars as the film's protagonist determined to find a habitable planet to save humanity.

Social Media Presence

On July 2009, McConaughey launched the @McConaughey[2] feed on Twitter, gathering upwards of 2.17 million followers over the next seven years. On May 20th, 2010, an official page for McConaughey was created on Facebook,[3] which accumulated more than 5.1 million likes within six years.

2016 Rio Olympics

During the 2016 Summer Olympics held in Rio de Janeiro in August 2016, Brazil, photographs and videos of McConaughey at various Olympic sporting events widely circulated on various social media platforms online (shown below).

On August 7th, the U.S. Olympic Team Vine channel posted a short clip of McConaughey at the USA House on Ipanema Beach (shown below). On August 11th, The Daily Dot[1] published an article titled "No one is a bigger patriot than Matthew McConaughey at the Olympics," highlighting several social media posts of McConaughey at the Olympic games.
