Online History

Luke Foods (@lukefoods) uploaded his first video to TikTok^[1] on December 1st, 2021, in which he reviewed McNuggets from McDonald's, gaining roughly 2,500 plays and 210 likes in two years (shown below, left). On December 4th, he launched his Instagram^[11] account.

Luke Foods received thousands of plays on TikTok^[2] videos posted in early 2022. However, he didn't gain a largely viral hit until a TikTok^[3] posted on January 10th, 2023, which received roughly 1.3 million plays and 136,000 likes in nine months (shown below, right).

Going into 2023, Luke Foods' channel continued to inspire engagement, evident in a TikTok^[4] posted on May 20th, 2023, in which he reviewed mozzarella sticks from fast food chains, receiving over 9.2 million plays and 922,300 likes in five months (shown below, left).

On October 13th, 2023, Luke Foods posted a TikTok^[6] in which he reviewed butter chicken and garlic naan from a Kentucky-based Indian restaurant called India Oven. The video received roughly 8.2 million plays and 984,100 likes in three days (shown below).

The video was reposted by X^[7] user @DiabolicalSpuds on October 14th, 2023, who captioned it, "This incredibly sincere white guy trying Indian food for the very first time and having his mind blown is so wholesome," gaining roughly 31.7 million views and 247,500 likes in two days (shown below).

The tweet inspired mass discourse via replies and quote retweets in the days that followed. For instance, on October 15th, 2023, X^[8] user @skooookum commented that "the most challenging aspect of moving from a small rural town to new york city was, for better or worse, no longer being surrounded by people like this," gaining roughly 16,800 likes in one day (shown below, left).
