LockPickingLaywer is a YouTuber whose channel is dedicated to showcasing weaknesses and defects in various types of locks and other security devices and picking locks using professional tools and non-standard methods.
Online History
On June 23rd, 2015, Washington, D.C.-based attorney using the moniker LockPickingLawyer launched a YouTube[1] channel, posting his first video[2] on June 24th (shown below, left). In the following years, LockPickingLawyer posted educational lockpicking videos showcasing vulnerabilities in various locks, safes and other types of security devices.
As of July 9th, 2020, the channel gained over 1.78 million subscribers and posted over 1100 videos which accumulated over 327 million total views. A September 22, 2018, video[3] showcasing the "double wrench" lock breaking method was the most popular video on the channel with over 16 million views (shown below, right).
Reputation
LockPickingLawyer is a well-known figure in the professional lockpicking community.[4] The YouTuber often reviews new locks produced by lock companies; on several occasions, companies responded to videos made by the YouTuber.[5] On at least one occasion, a company redesigned its product after it was picked by the YouTuber.[6]
LockPickingLawyer's videos have been several times covered by news outlets; for example, on January 5th, 2019, Daily Mail[7] reported on a video in which the YouTuber opens a hotel room using the "Do Not Disturb" sign. On May 20th, 2020, Art of Lockpicking[4] published an interview with LockPickingLawyer.
A number of phrases often said by LockPickingLawyer while picking locks have been referenced in memes. These quotes include phrases such as "a click out of one," "two is binding," "nothing on three," etc.
Personal Life
The real name of LockPickingLawyer is unknown. He resides and practices law as an attorney in the Washington D.C. area. The focus of his practice is unrelated to lockpicking.
LockPickingLawyer first got interested in lockpicking when he was a school student, although he abandoned his interest until 2015 when he was 32 years old. He launched his channel four months after getting into the hobby.
As of May 12th, 2020, LockPickingLawyer was 37 years old. He is married.
