Lil Pump is the stage name of Gazzy Garcia, an American rapper from Florida who gained popularity after several of his songs went viral. First beginning his career in 2016, he would go on to release a debut mixtape with viral hits such as "D Rose," "Flex Like Ouu," and "Gucci Gang". He is also noted as one of many rappers in the burgeoning rap scene known as SoundCloud Rap, alongside artists like XXXTentacion and Lil Uzi Vert.

History

Lil Pump started his career in 2016 when close friend and producer Smokepurpp asked him to rap over one of the beats he produced. The resulting freestyle would be released as Pump's self titled debut single, "Lil Pump."[1] Other songs would follow such as "Elementary," "Ignorant", "Gang Shit", and "Drum$tick." In the beginning of 2017, he released singles "D Rose" and "Boss" on SoundCloud, which gained over 70 million streams. On January 30th, 2017, he uploaded a music video for "D Rose" which gained over 64 million views (shown below).


In June, Lil Pump signed with Tha Lights Global and Warner Bros. Records. On October 6th, 2017, he released his debut self-titled mixtape, which peaked at number 3 on U.S. charts.

Reputation

Despite his popularity, Lil Pump has been criticized for the weak or lack of content in his songs, comprising of the usual hip-hop tropes and repetitive lyrics and ad-libs

Online Relevance

Gucci Gang

On August 31st, 2017, Lil Pump uploaded the audio for "Gucci Gang" to YouTube, gaining over 69 million views (shown below, left). On October 23rd, 2017, Lil Pump uploaded the video for "Gucci Gang" to YouTube (shown below, right). It has gained over 75 million views in three weeks. By November 8th, the song cracked the Billboard Top 100 chart.


The song began becoming a meme shortly after the release of the track. On September 1st, YouTuber Cristian Ocholo uploaded a remix that speeds up every time Lil Pump says "Gucci," gaining 965,000 views (shown below, left). On October 24th, YouTuber Pzuh uploaded an edit featuring no repeating words, gaining 1.9 million views (shown below, right).


Esketit

Esketit is a slang term meaning “let’s get it” popularized by rapper Lil’ Pump. Audio of the rapper saying the phrase have also been used in YouTube Remix videos. On March 3rd, 2016, Lil Pump released a video[1] for the song "Finesse the Pack" on YouTube. The song features the lyrics "Bitch you already know that I finessed the pack (eskeetit)." It is earliest known use of the word.

On April 8th, 2017, the YouTube account No Jumper posted a video of host Adam and Lil Pump at the mall. Upon seeing a sign for "Escada," Adam asks Lil' Pump what the sign says. Lil' Pump responds, "Esketit!" The video (shown below) received more than 6.3 million views in seven months.

Later that month, the first definition of the word appeared on Urban Dictionary. On May 8th, Urban Dictionary user Issa.Jony definied it as "Rapper Lil Pump's favorite word . A word that defines getting money." The post (shown below) received more than 1,370 upvotes in six months.
