Larry Lurr is a professional Super Smash Brothers player and streamer. Competitively, he was widely known for being one of the best Falco players across multiple Smash games. He also developed a large fanbase within the Smash community; in particular, a picture of him in a green hoodie and Mega Man t-shirt has been widely reposted, earning it the nickname the "Larry Drip". While popular among the Smash community for years, Lurr began to see wider recognition when he drew the apparent fascination of Jet Set Radio composer and widely known Twitter shitposter Hideki Naganuma, who spent several days in March 2022 reposting Larry Lurr memes.

History

Larry Lurr was born on March 20th, 1990, and resides in California.^[1] He began competing in tournaments beginning with a Super Smash Brothers Melee tournament in July 2007. Over the course of 15 years and multiple Smash games, he earned a reputation as a top player, taking sets from other top players including ZeRo and MKLeo. He was primarily a Falco main in Super Smash Brothers Melee, Brawl, and Ultimate, and played Fox in Super Smash Brothers Wii U.

Online Presence

On August 24th, 2016, Lurr joked on Twitter^[2] with fellow player Ally that he would harm Ally's green hoodie. Lurr demonstrated this by wearing the hoodie on top of a Mega Man T-shirt and red shorts (shown below).

The image of Lurr in the hoodie would go on to see usage in numerous memes in the Smash community and come to be known as the "Larry Drip." These began appearing with regularity in late 2021 and were largely posted and spread by Twitter user @GeorgeOD_ and Redditor Lowlish_. On November 13th, 2021, GeorgeOD_^[3] posted a meme featuring the Larry Drip, gaining over 1,100 retweets and 12,000 likes (shown below). The same image was posted two days later to /r/SmashBrosUltimate^[4] by Lowlish_, gaining over 760 points. On November 22nd, @GeorgeOD_^[5] posted an All Three Are Going To Lie To You meme featuring Lurr (shown below, right). The next day, Lowlish_ posted it to Reddit,^[6] gaining over 300 points.

Hideki Naganuma Tweets

On March 18th, 2022, Hideki Naganuma^[7] posted a Larry Lurr meme, gaining over 3,200 retweets and 47,000 likes (shown below).

Over the following week, Naganuma continued to post Lurr memes, goaded on by fans of Lurr and Lurr himself (examples^[8]^[9] shown below). Naganuma's fascination with Lurr was covered by Upcomer.^[10]
