John Luman Smith, commonly known as Jack Smith, is an American attorney who is famous for his experience in bringing high-stakes cases against politicians in the United States. In November 2022, he was appointed to investigate former President Donald J. Trump, which inspired a series of photoshopped edits using Smith's face in a wide array of memes about Trump's Capitol Insurrection indictment.

Career

Jack Smith was born on June 5th, 1969, and lived in Clay, New York, a suburb of Syracuse. He graduated from the State University of New York at Oneonta in 1991[1] and joined the Manhattan District Attorney's office shortly after, serving as assistant district attorney.

On November 18th, 2022, U.S. Attorney General Merrick Garland appointed Jack Smith as special counsel to oversee Donald Trump's criminal investigations regarding the January 6th Capitol Attack and alleged mishandling and storage of classified documents. On November 19th, 2022, the CNN[2] YouTube channel uploaded a video talking about the attorney's career (shown below), which garnered over 140,000 views and 2,200 likes in 10 months.

Online Presence

The news about Jack Smith's appointment to oversee Donald Trump's criminal investigations was widely spread around the world, subsequently inspiring various memes and photoshopped images using the attorney's face throughout late 2022 and 2023. For example, on November 22nd, 2022, Stephen Colbert [3] compared Jack Smith to Superman villain General Zod on The Late Show. The video (shown below) garnered roughly 2 million views and 40,000 likes in 10 months.

On June 11th, 2023, Twitter[4] user posted a photoshopped Jaws poster parody replacing the shark with Smith's face and Trump as a baby floating. The post (shown below, left) received over 1,700 likes and 427 retweets in two months. On March 22nd, Twitter[5] user @namwella1961 posted a photoshopped picture of Jack Smith paired with the overlay text "I'm Jack Smith, I take down big time criminals for a living. It's time to end this circus." The post received over 2,400 likes and 783 retweets in six months (shown below, right).
