About

iNcontroL, or known as Geoffrey Robinson, was a gamer who was recognized as a Starcraft II player and online personality.

History

iNcontroL was born on September 11th, 1985 and was from Seattle, Washington.[1] iNcontroL was well known as an American competitor in Starcraft II and formerly Brood War. He joined the team Evil Geniuses in 2009 and would later become their captain. iNcontroL led the team from 2010 until they disbanded in 2017. iNcontroL would pursue content creation, streaming on Twitch and casting for Starcraft II tournaments.[3] He would also participate in podcasting, and appeared on shows such as State of the Game hosted by JP "itmeJP" McDaniel until leaving in May 31, 2011 [20], and The Pylon Show co-hosted by Dan "Artosis" Stemkoski. [21]

Twitch

iNcontroL grew popular on Twitch, garnering over 114,000 subscribers before his passing.[25] He is also the face of a Twitch emote called TheThing is a global Twitch emote. The emote references to a time when he was growing his hair out and asked his make-up lady to gel his hair this way before hosting a podcast. His facial expression was purposely created to express his most grotesque faces.[23] This would later become petitioned on Reddit and later implemented into Twitch.[22][24]


Death

On July 21st and 22nd, 2019, iNcontroL's social media accounts announced that Robinson has passed away due to pulmonary embolism, or lodging in the lung arteries.[9][10][11][26]


His sudden passing led to an outpouring of support from the gaming and StarCraft community. The Starcraft community mourned for iNcontroL's death. A thread about his passing was posted in the Team Liquid forums, where users offered their condolences and well wishes.[4] Many Twitter users would respond with mourning towards iNcontroL's untimely death.[13][14][15][16][17][18][19] These included tweets by LiquidNazgul (shown below, left), esportsstarcraft (shown below, center) and @GennaBain (shown below, right).


Reddit users also expressed condolences for the passing of Robinson.[2] User Nagabe wrote:

…"I met him at MLG Columbus years ago and it actually changed my life. I struggled with weight all my life (340 pounds when I met him) and he gave me tips on dieting, lifting weights, and gaining confidence. It literally changed my life. I lost 130 pounds, got confident, started powerlifting, and got married. I don't think any of that would have happened if he would'nt have taken the time to talk to me." -u/Nagabe
