Hoop Angel or Hoop.Angel is a TikTok meme page notable for its dark humor, with a focus on subjects including violence towards homeless people and innocent bystanders. Hoop Angel often uses reaction clips of basketball players in their memes. The account started posting on TikTok in March 2022 and gained significant popularity in late 2023, garnering over 700,000 followers by November 2023.

History

On March 6th, 2022, TikToker^[1] @hoop.angel posted their first video, an explanation of LeBron James' earnings between 2003 and 2022. The page continued to post similar basketball-related content, including basketball-themed memes, throughout 2022, with the most popular example being a December 8th, 2022 meme that gained over 14 million views in a year (shown below, left).^[2]

Hoop Angel leaned further on memes throughout 2023, with the subject of the memes becoming darker. On March 29th, 2023, the TikToker^[3] posted a meme captioned, "My teacher talking about how her son with down syndrome just passed away," above a clip of two basketball players trying not to laugh, garnering over 1,8 million views in eight months (shown below, right).

On October 9th and 10th, the TikToker^[4]^[5]^[6] posted a series of three memes about someone making wishes to a genie, the first wish being to raise the rent of all single mothers, the second to start raining bricks on homeless people and the third to start world war III, garnering over 780,000, 3.4 million and 279,000 views respectively in a month (shown below, left and right).

The theme of violence and harm towards homeless people continued throughout 2023, as well as memes about abusing drug addicts and generally helpless or innocent people. On October 11th, Hoop Angel posted a meme to TikTok^[7] about throwing a 100 degree honey bun at a homeless man, helping spark the Throwing a Microwaved Honey Bun at a Homeless Man memes trend, garnering over 2.2 million views in a month.

As Hoop Angel's following grew and his memes, particularly the ones about homeless people, became more popular, TikTokers began to post videos referencing the page. On November 5th, 2023, TikTokers^[8]^[9] @latinaslayeerr and @icy_e posted videos referencing the account, garnering over 2,6 million and 460,000 views in five days (shown below).
