About

Gucci Mane is the stage name of American rapper Radric Davis, known for being one of the pioneer artists in the trap music genre. Gucci has gained much notoreity online for his catchphrase "Bitch I Might Be" and for his legal troubles, resulting in two sentences in 2005 and 2009 and a jail sentence from 2013 to 2016.

History

In 2001, Davis released the album La Flare on Str8 Drop Records, which released on approximately 1,000 CDs and distributed on the street. On May 24th, 2005, Davis released his debut studio album Trap House, which subsequently reached the top 20 on the Billboard R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart and the #1 position on the Billboard Heatseekers Album chart. In October 2006, Davis' second studio album Hard to Kill was released, which reached the #13 position on the Billboard Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart and the #4 position on the Billboard Independent Albums chart. In 2007, Davis released the albums Trap-A-Thon and Back to the Trap House. In 2009, he released the records Murder Was the Case and The State vs. Radric Davis, which contained the hit single "Wasted" which peaked at #2 on the Billboard Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart.

In 2010, Davis released the album The Appeal: Georgia's Most Wanted, with the first single "Gucci Time" premiering on the official Gucci Mane MySpace page.^[6] In March 2011, Davis released the EP The Return of Mr. Zone 6, which debuted at #18 on the Billboard 200. In May 2013, the album Trap House III was released. In June 2016, Davis announced that his 10th studio album Everybody Looking was set for release the following month on July 22nd.

Clone Hoax

In May 2016, Davis was released from prison after serving approximately two years for a federal firearms charge. On May 31st, YouTuber MrMoneyAD uploaded a video titled Is This The Real Gucci Mane? "Must Watch," in which he claims that recently released photographs of the rapper were faked (shown below). Within one month, the video gained over 600,000 views and 3,300 comments.

On June 19th, the website ThingsUThink^[7] published a satirical article about rapper Boosie Badass, which quoted a nonexistent interview in which Boosie claimed Davis was actually a clone:

"I rock with Gucci the long way but that ain’t the real Gucci, we both sitting in the studio and he seemed lost and after his show at Mansion he called me Herman […] You know they can do that crazy clone Sh*t these days, you look at Gucci and tell me that’s Gucci and ill pay yo child support and yo baby momma rent."

The following day, Twitter users began tweeting that the recently released Davis was actually a clone created by the United States government (shown below).

On June 21st, the @RealDJBJ Twitter feed posted a short video of Davis addressing the clone rumors, saying he is "wouldn't support or deny those accusations" (shown below). Over the next week, the video received upwards of 5,100 retweets and 3,500 likes.

The same day, the DomisLive NEWS YouTube channel uploaded a video about the rumors, garnering more than 1.2 million views and 4,800 comments over the next week. In the coming days, several news sites published articles about the clone discussions, including All Hip Hop,^[7] The Source,^[8] Complex^[9] and BuzzFeed.^[10]

Bitch I Might Be is an ambiguous retort falsely attributed to Atlanta-based rapper Gucci Mane in a photoshopped image posted to Reddit in April of 2013. The phrase is often used in text posts and image macro captions shared on the microblogging site Tumblr.

Free Gucci

Free Gucci is an expression stemming from the incarceration of Davis during his sentence from 2013 to 2016. The hashtag #freegucci has been tweeted just under 1,000 times according to the site Hashtracking.^[3] Additionally, many tracks with the keywords "free Gucci" have been uploaded to Soundcloud, accounting for over 4,500,000 plays.^[4]

Burr

Burr is a phrase coined by Gucci referring to the diamonds on his jewelry. In 2009, an entry for the term was submitted to Urban Dictionary,^[2] describing the phrase as "coined by Gucci Mane, referring to how icy his chains are".

Personal Life

Gucci Mane was born in Birmingham, Alabama, and moved to Atlanta, Georgia at the age of 9^[1]. that same year, Gucci was charged with murder after one of her companions fired at a group of men who were trying to steal his trademark gold chain. While the case, was eventually dropped in January 2006, due to insufficient evidence, he was hit by another legal issue, cited of assaulting a nightclub promoter, and granted a six-month prison sentence for the assault. He was released from jail in the same month of his murder case was dismissed.^[5] In November 2009 during when he planned to release another studio album, Gucci was sentenced to 12 months in jail for violating probation which was stemmed from the 2006 assault case. Later in 2013, he was charged with attacking a fan, as well as two counts of possession of firearms. ^[6]
