Fetty Wap is an American rapper and contemporary R&B singer, best known for his 2014 hit single, Trap Queen followed by his top-ten singles, 679, and My Way. Fetty gained extensive popularity on the internet because of these tracks, especially in the Black Twitter scene.

Early Life

Fetty was born in Paterson, New Jersey. He had only started gaining interest in music in 2013. As a child, Fetty was diagnosed with glaucoma in both eyes, causing the loss of his left eye, he has however refused to use either an eyepatch or a fake eye because "he doesn't want to look like everybody else"[1].

Music Career

Fetty wap has been the second rapper after Eminem to have 3 of his singles (Trap Queen being #10, My Way #6 and 679 #18) on the top 20 of the hot 100 chart[2]. He released his self titled debut album on September 25th, 2015, including a 4/5 review by The Guardian, and a 7.6 by Pitchfork, as well as going #1 on the Billboard 200 charts in it's first week.

Trap Queen

In February of 2014, Fetty released his first single, titled Trap Queen. Although it was released in February, the song began to receive recognition in later 2014, going platinum. The music video for the song received over 240,000,00 views, 1,000,000 likes, and 72,000 dislikes.

The song gained heavy popularity on Vine, the most popular being of Viner Arielle Vandenberg hitting a whip to the track. The vine gained 25 million views.

My Way

The third of Fetty Wap's top 10 songs was My Way featuring Monty. The track, which has two versions (the original and a remix by Canadian artist Drake), the original which has over 31,000,000 views, and the Drake remix which has 100,000,000 views.

The track gained notability for Fetty's pronunciation of the word squad before the track begins, among other things on the track.

1738

1738 is a popular catchphrase used Fetty in most of his most popular songs. The phrase originates from Remy Martin, a popular cognac, which began serving Accord Royal that year, and branded it as such. The number 1738 quickly has become affiliated with the rapper, with many users on Twitter and Vine making jokes involving the number and the rapper.

The most popular Vine of the catchphrase was uploaded July 14th, 2015, by viner DeStorm Power. The vine involves DeStorm going to a cafe, and having his total ending up at 17.38. The Vine gained over 9 million views.

Social Media Presence

On August 9th, 2015, pop artist Taylor Swift posted a concert photo to her Instagram after having Fetty join her on stage to preform Trap Queen. The photo gained 1.4 million likes and just under 25,000 comments in 6 weeks.
