The video earned 30,300 views and 870 likes in under three years (below, left). On April 1st, 2022, she announced the news of her cancer diagnosis to her followers in a TikTok[5] that earned 131,000 views and 3,500 likes in under two years (below, right).

Dance You Out Of My Head

On January 10th, 2024, she uploaded a video of herself from the hospital, announcing the news that she was losing her battle with cancer, and sharing the audio clip of her song “Dance You Outta My Head,” which is dedicated to her son, Loren. The TikTok[2] (seen below) earned 61.8 million views and six million likes in under two months.

“Dance You Out Of My Head” was officially released on Spotify and other streaming platforms on January 19th, 2024. On January 28th, Janice uploaded the full song to her YouTube[10] channel @catjanice, where it earned 2.5 million views and 240,000 likes in just over a month (seen below).

“Dance You Out Of My Head” went on to become a TikTok audio, which gained over 2.5 million recorded uses on TikTok in less than two months. The song quickly rose to be number one on TikTok’s Billboard Top 50.[3] On January 30th, 2024, Janice uploaded a TikTok[4] reacting to her song’s rise to the top of the TikTok Billboard, with a caption thanking her fans for giving her “one more moment alive.” The TikTok, seen below, earned over 26 million views and 1.5 million likes in approximately a month.

Death

On February 28th, 2024, Janice’s family, the Ipsans, uploaded a photo of her to Instagram,[6] @cat.janice. In the caption, they shared the news that she had passed away (seen below).

This morning, from her childhood home and surrounded by her loving family, Catherine peacefully entered the light and love of her heavenly creator.

We are eternally thankful for the outpouring of love that Catherine and our family have received over the past few months. Cat saw her music go places she never expected and rests in the peace of knowing that she will continue to provide for her son through her music. Thousands of fans reacted to the news of her death on social media, particularly on TikTok. For instance, on February 29th, 2024, TikToker[12] @noahglenncarter discussed the news and shared "Dance You Out Of My Head" which earned 12.8 million views and 1.5 million likes (seen below, left). While most posts about Janice's passing were sympathetic, some were not, due to an unconfirmed suspicion that she might have been pro-Israel in the Israel-Hamas conflict. TikToker @therealmelindastrauss posted a TikTok[14] claiming some were "celebrating her passing," describing people who targeted Janice in her final days as "full of hate." Her February 29th TikTok (below, right) received 137,700 views and 11,800 likes in a day.

Cat Janice maintained several social media accounts, the most notable being her TikTok[7] @cat.janice, which had over two million followers at the time of her death. Her verified Spotify[11] creator profile had over 3.3 million monthly listeners in February 2024. Her Instagram,[8] @cat.janice, had about 508,000 followers, and her YouTube[9] channel, @catjanice, had approximately 104,000 subscribers as well.

Personal Life

Catherine Janice Ipsan was born on January 20th, 1993 in Virginia. She started writing music at the age of 12, and released her first album in 2014. Janice was diagnosed with cancer in 2022, which resulted in her passing away on February 28th, 2024, leaving behind a seven-year-old son, Loren, who will be inheriting the proceeds from all of her music.
