Peni Parker Is An Evangelion Character is a theory and series of memes depicting the character Peni Parker as a character from the Neon Genesis Evangelion universe. With the release of Across The Spider-Verse, the genre of fan art and tweets had a resurgence.

Origin

As part of the lead-up to the Into The Spider-Verse movie, a set of comics was released showcasing various Spider-Men from different universes, with the October 15th, 2014 issue showcasing Peni Parker and her home dimension. On June 30th, 2017, images from the comic were uploaded to Imgur^[1] by the user Drewtendo64, with a prominent image showcasing Rei, Asuka and Kaworu (shown below).

Spread

With the release of Across the Spider-Verse, the character returned in a much darker light than before, looking depressed and upset. This led to fan speculation that something bad must've happened in her original dimension, as brought up by Twitter^[2] user @Yotakuboi in a June 7th quote retweet claiming that Spideyvangelion is what happened to her, earning over 104,000 likes in two days (shown below).

This initial viral post led to a wave of other posts and references being made about Peni relating to the Neon Genesis Evangelion. With the rise in canon events memes, scenes from Evangelion were used as references to Peni's supposed canon event, with the third impact being the most prominent meme made, as seen in the Twitter^[3] post by @Gothsukalangley on June 9th, 2023 (shown below).
