Password on the Back of the Router refers to parody images imitating the indecipherable passwords that are typically listed on the back of Wi-Fi routers. In July 2019, image macros containing the jokes widely circulated within the /r/DankMemes community on Reddit.

Origin

July 23rd, 2019, Redditor SkypMar uploaded a Minecraft image of indecipherable text with the caption "'The WiFi password is on the back of the router.' The back of the router:" to r/dankmemes^[1](shown below). The post gained over 66,600 points (96% upvoted) in two days.

Spread

On July 24th, 2019, Redditors began posting variations on the router password parody to various subreddits. Redditor The_Riot_Drummer posted a doctor's handwriting parody/ router password crossover to r/dankmemes^[2] which gained 34 points (92% upvoted) in a day (shown below, left). That same day, Redditor jemian23 uploaded a variation featuring Donnie from The Wild Thornberrys to r/memes^[3] which garnered 48 points (87% upvoted) in a day (shown below, center). Redditor DREWNSRLU uploaded another iteration to r/me_irl^[4] (shown below, right). On July 25th, Memebase^[5] published a compilation of the memes.
