Pass The Ball Down, also called Pass The Ball, is a Discord / forum game in which users appear to "pass down" an object, typically a basketball, using subjects, including Twitch emotes.

Origin

The origins of the "Pass the Ball" game are unclear, but it is similar to Discord games such as the user below is triple gay. A popular precursor to "pass the ball" from December 14th, 2019 is found on Twitch streamer xQc's Discord server.^[1] The image shows a person throwing a football and a Get Out of Jail Free card from Monopoly with the caption "you know what? i'm passing this one to the homie below" (shown below, left). Users chain posted the image repeatedly. At an unknown point, a derivative image was created to keep the ball instead of passing it (shown below, right).

On March 19th, 2020, the earliest found instance of the "pass the ball" using Twitch emotes was posted in the #unfunny-memes channel of xQc's Discord server by user Mango [TGO]. The meme features the Better Twitch TV Twitch emote peepoHappy with the text "Pass the ball down" (shown below).^[2]

Variations of the original pass the ball image were created, typically using Twitch emotes like peepoHappy and with several images referencing each other. One such series includes the 4Weird emote deflating the ball (shown below, left) and the PauseChamp emote reinflating the ball (shown below, right).

The meme spread to various Discord servers by July 2020.^[3][4][5]
