About

Apibete Io Bipru Kikibika Ikai Tru, also known as Overwritten Reddit Comment Copypasta, refers to a copypasta that has developed on Reddit in the mid-2020s that has mysteriously appeared in threads across the site and is theorized to be what is written when a comment is overwritten by a bot. It is unknown why the text keeps appearing and it is also unknown if the text is a real language.

Origin

It is unknown when the "Apibete io bipru kikibika ikai tru…" text first appeared on Reddit, though it appears to have been around the summer of 2023. It was first discussed in its own thread on March 17th, 2024, in a thread posted to the subreddit /r/OutOfTheLoop[1] by user notafishthatsforsure. The user noticed "a comment… said this, but all of the replies to it were reacting as if the original comment said something different" and that the text only appeared on Reddit in multiple threads. They also said Google Translate identified the language as Telugu but ChatGPT identified it as "gibberish." The thread gained over 310 upvotes in one day.

One of the earliest dated comments featuring the text appears in /r/gamingcirclejerk[2] on July 27th, 2018 (shown below). The comment says it was edited "9 months ago" as of March 18th, 2024, and the original poster's account is deleted. As described by /u/notafishthatsforsure, replies to the text seem to be responding to something else the comment once said.

The full text reads:

Spread

It is currently unknown why the text appears in multiple threads on Reddit. However, a search of the term[3] reveals that it appears multiple times in subreddits related to gaming and Brazil, including /r/gamingcirclejerk[2] and /r/brasil. Furthermore, all the comments have the same "edited" timeframe, which is "9 months ago" as of March 18th, 2024. This may suggest that one Redditor may have deleted their account and erased their history on the site by having a bot overwrite all their comments with the same text.

In the March 17th, 2024, /r/OutOfTheLoop thread, users theorized as to why this specific text was chosen. One of the top comments, posted by Redditor /u/GreyFoxLemonGrass[4] (shown below), suggested it may be due to recent news that Reddit is selling user data to AI Training companies[5] and that the user was intentionally sabotaging potential AI training by filling the site with gibberish (similar to the related bazinga spam). However, that is unproven, as the comments were edited in 2023 and news about Reddit's deal with an AI training company was announced in February 2024.

One possible explanation could be the user was overwriting their comments as part of the Reddit API Protest. This would align with the "edited on" timestamps on the copypasta comments. For example, on June 23rd, 2023, nine months before the /r/OutOfTheLoop thread, Redditor rekabis in /r/apolloapp[6] advocated overwriting Reddit comments instead of deleting them because Reddit will store deleted comments.
