Overly Suave IT Guy is an advice animal image macro series featuring a photograph of a man seated in front of a laptop computer and various pick up lines combined with technical references to IT diagnostics and troubleshooting. The character can be seen as a variation on the geeky pick up artist stereotype, which includes several other advice animals like Dat Ash, Priority Peter and Pickup Line Scientist.
Origin
On October 24th, 2013, Redditor j0brien submitted an image macro complimenting a woman's body with a wordplay on F5, a function key that serves as a shortcut command for reloading a webpage, in an /r/AdviceAnimals[1] post titled “Introducing: Overly Suave IT Guy" (shown below). In the first 24 hours, the post gained over 28,100 up votes and 690 comments.
Precursor
On May 28th, 2012, Redditor THENOOBLER submitted a post titled “Oh. . . you Bill Gates” to the /r/funny[7]subreddit, featuring a photograph of Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates laying down on a desk and a risque pun involving the name of the company. (shown below). Prior to being archived, the post gathered more than 6,100 up votes and 50 comments.
Spread
On the same day, Redditor kevted5085 submitted an image macro using the word “Trojan” as a double entendre for viruses and the condom brand to /r/AdviceAnimals[6] (shown below, left), which garnered upwards of 21,900 up votes and 270 comments in the following 20 hours. Two hours later, Redditor maximum_Cman posted an image macro joking about granting a woman access permissions to "the D" to the /r/AdviceAnimals[5] subreddit, (shown below, right). In the next 18 hours, the post accumulated more than 3,900 up votes and 45 comments.
Also on October 24th, BuzzFeed[2] published a compilation of notable examples from the series, followed by additional coverage on FunnyJunk[3] and Mashable[4] on the next day.
