Our Expectations for You Were Low But Holy Fuck is a reaction image macro featuring a protest sign with the phrase on it. The image has been used to express surprise when a subject reaches a new level of disappointment.
Origin
The earliest known usage of the phrase was tweeted [4] by @EscoBlades on July 12th, 2018 in response to a post by Facebook (shown below).

On November 8th, 2018, Redditor [1] TheBigChimp posted a photograph in the /r/pics subreddit of a protest with the phrase on a sign. In a little more than a year, the post received more than 87,000 points (69% upvoted) and 7,100 comments (shown below).

Spread
That day, people began sharing the sign and using it to criticize such politicians as United States President Donald Trump (example below, left).[2]
The following month, on December 6th, Redditor[3] probzata used the image to react to the thumbnail for YouTube Rewind 2018. The post received more than 10,000 points (98% upvoted) and 290 comments (shown below, center).
Over the next year, the image was used by people online to respond to news stories and posts by public figures (example below, right).
