"Finally! A Worthy Opponent! Our Battle Will Be Legendary!" is a memorable quote by character Tai Lung from 2008 animated film Kung Fu Panda. Since 2016, the quote has been circulated as an image macro and an exploitable by Spanish-speaking users. In February 2019, the format reached mainstream attention on Reddit, with memes referencing individuals challenging others to a fight, often while overestimating or underestimating own power.

Origin

On June 6th, 2008, DreamWorks Animation animated film Kung Fu Panda premiered in the U.S.[1] In one scene of the film, the main antagonist Tai Lung, a snow leopard, contemplates his future encounter with the main protagonist Po.



Finally! A worthy opponent! Our battle will be legendary.

On January 3rd, 2015, an anonymous Imgur[2] user uploaded a captioned GIF of the scene to the platform.

Starting 2016, memes based on the two-panel screen capture of the scene have been circulated by Spanish-speaking users. The earliest posts[3] following the format can be traced to at least March 11th, 2016, with numerous examples appearing on Facebook and Memedroid in the following years.



In November 2016, an anonymous Funpic.us[4] user reposted the earliest known English version of the meme from 9GAG (original post unavailable).



The format did not receive any further spread use among English-speaking users until February 2019. On February 6th, 2019, Redditor[5] bramoeska posted a version of the meme to /r/HistoryMemes subreddit. The post gained over 14,200 upvotes in six days.



Following the post by bramoeska, more versions of the meme were posted on Reddit, including /r/historymemes[6], /r/freefolk[7] and /r/dankmemes[8] subreddits, and on Instagram[9].
