Oupi Goupi is the name given to an angry-looking kitten in a series of French cat-themed lore videos on TikTok, alongside other characters like Larry, La Créature, Le Lobotomisateur and L'Électrecien, among others. The French cat videos were popularized by TikToker @lakaka.land, who took inspiration from the You Better Not Mess With My Gang sound, as well as @offlainnnn's Scariest Stories video format, which also gave rise to the Creature Feature meme. Memes about Oupi Goupi spread outside of @lakaka.land's videos by January 2025.

Origin

The earliest known images of the kitten now known as "Oupi Goupi" were first shared on Tumblr in late 2022. Sometime in November 2022, Tumblr user @ichosetobethisway posted the earliest known image of the kitten alongside text that read, "rrrrrrrrrrrrr," implying that the kitten looked as if it were angry and growling. The post gathered over 20,000 notes in three years, although the original account has since been deactivated.

A screenshot of the post was reposted to Twitter / X by user @PunchingCat^[1] on January 3rd, 2023.

On November 18th, 2022, Tumblr^[2] user @teathattast posted the image with a text overlay that read, "I am not my sadness," gathering over 800 notes in three years.

The name "Oupi Goupi," as used by the TikToker^[3] @Lakaka.Land, likely originated from the TikTok sound You Better Not Mess With My Gang, which also gave rise to the name "Larry."

However, the earliest mention of the cat alongside the name "OupiGoupi" was a December 13th, 2024, post by TikToker @Lakaka.land that gathered over 290,000 plays and 45,000 likes in three months.

The TikToker @Lakaka.land^[4] posted more videos about Oupi Goupi in January 2025, including a video on January 10th with a title that translates to, "The Origin of Oupi Goupi." The video gathered over 4 million plays and 500,000 likes in two months.

By mid-January 2025, other TikTokers began latching onto the Oupi Goupi kitten, including @pekoman_cartes,^[5] who posted a video on January 17th showing an Oupi Goupi Pokémon card and gathered over 2.4 million plays and 400,000 likes in two months.

On January 21st, 2025, TikToker^[7] @alexandreazerty_ posted a powerscaling meme featuring Oupi Goupi against Le Lobotomisateur, gathering over 230,000 plays and 32,000 likes in a month.

On January 26th, 2025, TikToker^[6] @yoh_cmps posted a video in the gym alongside text that translates to, "No need for motivation when you know the past of OUPI GOUPI." The post gathered over 80,000 plays and 18,000 likes in a month.
