About
Otto Danielle Wood Serial Killer Allegations refers to a series of memes claiming that the drummer for the band Waterparks, Otto Danielle Wood, is a serial killer. The memes purportedly stem from the fact that Otto Wood does not have social media profiles and that he shares a name with depression-era desperado Otto Wood, who murdered A.W. Kaplan in 1923. Memes about Wood being a serial killer first began to appear online as early as May 2022 and were popularized between May and June 2024. The memes have been supported by the band, with Waterparks releasing merch reading "future Otto Wood murder victim" and releasing a song referencing the memes, "Real Super Dark."
Origin
It is unclear exactly when the jokes about Otto Wood being a serial killer started or exactly where they stem from, with sources like Genius[1] claiming they possibly stem from his "quiet nature, lack of online presence, or occasional menacing look" and Fandom[2] claiming it's because of his lack of online presence. Others claim it's because he shares a name with desperado Otto Wood, who, according to Wikipedia,[3] killed a man in 1923.
The earliest known instance of the meme was posted by the official @waterparks X[4] account, consisting of a Photoshopped poster for Making a Murderer, writing, "MAKING A MURDERER: THE OFFICIAL OTTO WOOD EPISODE ON NETFLIX," garnering over 1,600 likes in two years (shown below).
Spread
The memes about Wood being a serial killer spread over the following years. On January 26th, 2023, Waterparks released the song "Real Super Dark," which features the lyrics, "I'll call you, beep you later if Otto doesn't serial kill me (Otto, I'm sorry, stop)."
On March 6th, TikToker[5] @wawaparx posted a video joking about Wood, garnering over 350,000 views in a year (shown below, left). On May 31st, 2024, TikToker[6] @awstenmadeatiktokalright, a member of Waterparks, posted a video encouraging viewers to Google "Otto Danielle Wood serial killer allegations," garnering over 2 million views in three months (shown below, right).
On June 2nd and 4th, TikTokers[7][8] @emotionsonvinyl and @jocelynratzer posted videos making jokes about Wood being a serial killer, garnering over 5.3 million and 5.4 million views respectively in two months (shown below, left and right).
On June 8th, TikToker[9] @awstenmadeatiktokalright posted a video facetiming Wood "for the first time" since the jokes went viral (shown below). In the video, Wood acts cagey and quickly gets off the call. It was also posted to X,[10] garnering over 1,100 likes in two months.
