About
Operation Warp Speed is a proposed plan set forth by President Donald Trump to develop a coronavirus vaccine and reopen America by the end of 2020.
Origin
On May 15th, 2020, Donald Trump held a press conference at the White House Rose Garden in which he said America was back and undergoing "Operation Warp Speed," which appeared to be his goal to develop a coronavirus vaccine by the end of 2020. He further said that with or without one, he wanted America to return to pre-coronavirus conditions in an effort to boost the economy.[1] He appointed Moncef Slaoui, former head of pharmaceutical company GlaxoSmithKline’s vaccines division, and Army Materiel Command Gen. Gustave Perna on logistics as the leaders of "Operation Warp Speed."
Spread
The announcement of the "operation" led Twitter users to mock the name and compare it to the Space Force. Twitter user @secularagnostic[2] made a joke comparing the name to the film Spaceballs, gaining over 180 retweets and 830 likes (shown below, left). User @RobAnderson2018[3] posted comparisons to pop culture, gaining over 60 retweets and 280 likes (shown below, right). The phrase "Operation Warp Speed" trended on Twitter throughout the day.[4]
