Onionbro is a fan-given nickname to the character Siegmeyer of Catarina from Dark Souls. The nickname is due to his round armor, which resembles an onion.

Origin

Siegmeyer of Catarina appeared in the first Dark Souls game, released September 22nd, 2011. The player can first see Siegmeyer in Sen's Fortress. Siegmeyer is memorable for being seen sitting, deep in thought. His storyline can end either by sacrificing himself for the player, or being saved by the player and going hollow, attacking his daughter Sieglinde.^[1]

Spread

Siegmeyer was quickly given the nickname "Onionbro" shortly after the game's release.^[2] He quickly became a fan favorite. On October 19th, 2012, YouTube user VaatiVidya uploaded an homage threading together various lines of Siegmeyer to portray a storyline for the character that gained over 1.6 million views.

Fan Art of the character has continued to appear since the character's appearance. For example, on August 11th, 2013, a piece of Siegmeyer fan art was submitted to /r/darksouls^[3] that gained over 380 upvotes (shown below, left). Fan art of the character was submitted by DeviantArt artist MenasLG on October 3rd, 2015 (shown below, right).
