Onii-Chan Competitions, Campeonato De Falar Onii-chan or Concurso De Decir Onii-chan refers to a series of viral videos of anime conventions across Latin American countries in which people compete for the best onii-chan shout. Videos showing the competitions started to go viral on YouTube and TikTok around September 2022.

Origin

On September 5th, 2022, the YouTube[1] channel @SombrasdeRebelion uploaded a video titled "Looking for the most kawaii 'Onii-chan' at NOGFest 2022." The competition was held at an anime convention in Lima, Peru, and featured cosplayers shouting the Japanese word for “older brother" for an audience to decide who is the cutest (kawaii) person to say the word. The video (seen below) garnered 6.7 million views and 175,000 likes in nine months.

Spread

The competition gained more attention when TikTok[2] user @chkakun posted a video on September 7th, 2022, titled "concurso de decir onii-chan." The video (seen below) features the same competition that occurred in Lima, Peru, garnering 12 million plays and 1.9 million likes in nine months.

Over the next few months, more onii-chan competition videos went viral on TikTok. For instance, TikTok[3] user @fit_journeynp posted a video asking two people at an anime convention to say "onii-chan" and asking his audience to decide who said it best. The post (seen below, left) garnered 8.4 million plays and 558,000 likes in nine months. On March 12th, 2023, TikTok[4] user @kale_hece posted an onii-chan competition at Santa Cruz de la Sierra, Bolivia. The video (seen below, right) garnered 6.2 million plays and 433,000 likes in three months.
