#OneChipChallenge or One Chip Challenge is a hashtag accompanying videos of people attempting to eat a single Paqui Carolina Reaper tortilla chip.

Origin

In August 2013, the Carolina Reaper pepper won the record for the world's hottest chili pepper by Guinness World Records, coming in at 2.2 million Scoville heat units.[2] In mid-September 2016, the tortilla chip company Pacqui launched the #OneChipChallenge social media campaign for participants to post footage of themselves eating one Pacqui Carolina Reaper tortilla chip along with the hashtag.[4]

Precursor

On September 11th, 2016, Instagram user @lizzywurst uploaded footage of two girls crying out in pain after eating Carolina Reaper peppers (shown below). Within one year, the video gained over 1.3 million views and 6,200 comments.

On September 30th, 2016, The Crudge Brothers YouTube channel uploaded a video in which hosts Nick and J attempt to eat 10 chips each (shown below, left). Over the next year, the video gained over 2.16 million views and 1,400 comments. On November 27th, the DavidParody YouTube channel posted a #OneChipChallenge video, garnering more than 2.5 million views and 9,200 comments over the next year (shown below, right).

On October 25th, 2017, the KWGN Denver Facebook page posted a video of news anchor Natalie Tysdal throwing up on camera after eating one Paqui chip (shown below). That day, Redditor MrDirt submitted a YouTube reupload of the video to /r/videos,[3] where it received upwards of 38,000 points (85% upvoted) and 3,400 comments within 24 hours.
