One-Winged Kong is a prominent mashup of the "DK Rap" from Donkey Kong 64 and "One-Winged Angel," the theme song of Final Fantasy VII antagonist Sephiroth. Since a mashup of the two songs was posted to YouTube in 2020, several memers have enhanced and remixed it, while others have used it in gameplay montages for various video games.
Origin
On April 17th, 2020, YouTuber Salty Cabbage[1] posted "One-Winged Kong," a remix of the "DK Rap" and "One-Winged Angel" songs, gaining over 1.2 million views in two and a half years (shown below).
Spread
On December 29th, 2020, YouTuber[2] The8BitDrummer posted a drum cover of the track, gaining over 305,000 views in nearly two years (shown below, left). On January 11th, 2021, YouTuber SaintDicc then posted a version of the song with enhanced audio, gaining over 1.3 million views in nearly two years (shown below, right).
On January 24th, 2021, YouTuber[3] Saint Dicc posted a remixed version of the track that altered the tempo and usage of the DK rap lyrics. The video gained over 294,000 views in nearly two years (shown below, left). On July 5th, 2021, YouTuber JacobPierce Music then uploaded a fully orchestrated version of the song set to Donkey Kong clips from Super Smash Brothers Ultimate. The clip gained over 153,000 views in 16 months (shown below, right).
On June 13th, 2022, Smash player Nairo posted a clip to his YouTube[4] channel where he played Sephiroth, utilizing a mod that gave Sephiroth the appearance of Donkey Kong in reference to the crossover song and meme. The clip gained over 44,000 views in four months (shown below).
